Is where the old meets new. The house was in a dilapidated old railway house in the south suburbs of Durban. We managed to propose minor design interventions that do not detract from the original aesthetic of the house while reworking large components of the interior to achieve a modern and open living. The plot was overgrown with trees and black bamboo. The site had to be re-landscape to achieve a rolling landscape that would celebrate the structure within in.

The owner of the property wished renovate his property by modernizing its looks and aesthetics. This was his secondary residence, therefore he wished to add an entertainment area, look into the landscaping and increase some living rooms. The architectural approach was to continue with the existing prominent features of the house while adding a few key design features which would awaken the sleepish charm of this house

The Family residence is located in the laid back suburb of Shelly Beach in the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal. The family had out grown the existing house so they needed to expand the property as well as to give it a modernized aesthetic. As the house is located near the beach, we opted for a tropical form of architectural response, where we have a introduced free flowing special configuration with operable shutters and screen in the new living area position for those hot summer afternoons. The living opens up to the east to capitalise on the sea views, and we have introduced some greenery in the upper balcony area so accentuate the conceptual approach.
